From October 14th to 19th, 2024, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) will host Mental Health Week. In close collaboration, JGU, the City of Mainz, and the Leibniz Institute for Resilience Research (LIR) present a diverse program that focuses intensively on promoting the mental health and resilience of students. Resilience is crucial for facing the challenges of student life and successfully managing psychological stress.

The event kicked off on Monday, 14th October 2024, in the old cafeteria of JGU Mainz with an opening keynote by Dr Maria Gropalis from the Psychotherapeutic Counselling Centre JGU and Kate Utzschneider from the LIR, both of whom were also part of the subsequent panel discussion. Together with Ministerial Director Katharina Heil (Ministry of Science and Health), Vice President for Studies and Teaching Prof Dr Stephan Jolie (JGU) and AStA board member Leo Kuballa, the participants discussed preventative measures to help students cope with stress. The panel discussion was moderated by Prof Dr Margarete Imhof (Emerita).

The ‘Healthy Studying’ project, which provides students with concrete strategies for staying healthy during their studies, was also presented as part of this event. This project is essential for helping students to proactively promote their mental health and become more resilient to the challenges of everyday study life. The project is aimed at all universities in Rhineland-Palatinate and is supported by the Ministry of Science and Health. More information about the project can be found here
